Goals/Purpose
We are a group of undergraduate students at the University of California, Los Angeles. The objective of this website is to inform the public about New Caledonia's tropical dry forest. The dry forest of New Caledonia is one of the world's most endangered forest due to the small extent of natural forest remaining in the ecoregion. The dry forest in New Caledonia features a high level of endemism and threatened species. This website gives a complete list of avifauna, mammals, insects, and herpetofauna that are found in the dry forest. These species are now limited to small areas, but with the expanding human population and growing economic dependence on the natural environment, there are now increasing demands on the regions natural resources. The ecoregion has been degraded by human activity and conservation action is severely needed to secure the survival of many species.
A sound knowledge of species found in New Caledonia and information on their conservation status is necessary to make such informed decisions. There must be better management of fire and non-native species, as well as management and reintroduction of native species in the dry forest ecoregion. More awareness and research must be done to save New Caledonia's endemic species. Our goal is to inform the public about the unique biodiversity of New Caledonia's tropical dry forests and hope that conservation organizations can benefit from the information on the website.
